Miracles

As I was reading about Jesus’ first miracle, that of turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana, I was struck by how John mentions that after Jesus revealed his glory this way, “his disciples put their faith in him.” It is true that Jesus’ miracles showed his power over nature and revealed the way he would go about his ministry —helping others, speaking with authority, and being in personal touch with people. Though miracles do happen today (miracles being defined as superhuman events that demonstrate God’s power) more often followers of Jesus manifest God’s power by being Jesus’ hands and feet. When we continue to do as Jesus did and try to work to renew and reverse the effects of fallen creation by taking care of the poor, weak, crippled, orphaned, and blind, we become part of re-creation and are indeed working miracles in and through the power of Christ’s spirit within. As we love our neighbor as ourselves, we reveal God’s glory.                                                                                         Reflections:   John 2
